Shaken Up

If you’ve ever experienced an earthquake, you know how scary it was for East Coasters when the ground started moving on Tuesday afternoon.  With Mineral, VA as its epicenter and a magnitude of 5.8, the August 23rd earthquake was felt from South Carolina to Maine.  That may not be such an unusual happening in other parts of the country, but we haven’t had an earthquake like this since 1944! Thankfully, there was little damage.  But it seems like there’s been one natural disaster after another in the past year or two.  And in the quake’s aftermath, with Hurricane Irene ready to strike, we couldn’t help but think about our readiness. How prepared are we? How prepared are you? Does your school have a safety procedure in place?  How will you make students aware of that plan without overwhelming them? As you head back to school, there’s no better time to explore these questions. And as always, we offer a breadth of resources to help.  Relevant topics include Earthquakes, Plate Tectonics, Hurricanes, Weather, Natural Disasters, Tsunami, Tornadoes, Floods, and Avalanches. Plus, turn to lesson plans like Back to School With Natural Disasters, Cause and Effect: Natural Disasters, and Global Connections Through Natural Disasters.
