Grade Levels: 3-5, 6-8, K-3

In the BrainPOP ELL movie We Can Be Waiters (L2U2L5), Ben and Moby visit Ben’s Uncle Joe on his farm. They visit his restaurant, too, where they end up helping out as waiters! In this lesson plan, which is adaptable for grades K-8, students work with a partner to match sentence halves, and put them in order in a sequencing activity.

Lesson Plan Common Core State Standards Alignments

Students will:

  1. Collaborate with a partner to match sentence phrases and clauses.
  2. Sequence events according to the movie.
  3. Verify their work by finding the correct sequence of events in the movie.

Preparation:

Make enough copies of the sentence strips on cardstock for each pair of students. Either cut them up ahead of time and separate the sets with a paper clip, or have the students do it.

Lesson Procedure:

  1. Uncle Joe's Restaurant Sentence Strips. After watching the movie, We Can Be Waiters (L2U2L5), distribute sets of cut-up Sentence Strips to pairs of students. Partners match the sentence halves, and then put them in the correct sequence according to the movie. When they have finished, have them watch the movie again to verify the sequence.
