1.2.3 Present Progressive (Questions) Lesson Plan
In the BrainPOP ELL movie, Who’s Making Noise? (L1U2L3), Ben is trying to do homework, but it’s too noisy! In this lesson plan, adaptable for grades K-8, students participate in activities, use images and the Concept Attainment learning strategy to construct questions in the present progressive tense.
Students will:
- Ask and answer questions using the present progressive tense.
- Produce wh- questions in the present progressive.
- Identify wh- questions in the movie.

Lesson Procedure:
What Am I Doing? A student stands at the back of the classroom (or another location, out of sight of the class) and pantomimes an action. Without looking at the student volunteer, the other students ask questions to determine what he or she is doing. The volunteer answers in complete sentences.
For example: Are you talking on the phone? No, I’m not talking on the phone.Who? What? When? Where? Why? Ask the students to write sentences describing the actions in the image What Are They Doing? Then have students make flashcards of the question words (What, Where, When, Who, Why). Working in pairs, students ask and answer five questions about the image, using each of the wh- question words.
- Catch the Questions. Have students make a chart with five columns, and the wh- question words as the headings (Who, What, When, Why, Where). On a repeated viewing of the movie Who’s Making Noise (L1U2L3), ask them to make a tally on the chart when they hear a wh- question. Pause the movie, and ask a volunteer to think of a different wh- question about the paused image onscreen.
