This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic, Latin Music, and addresses the standard of analyzing connections among, and differences between, different musical styles. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of creative projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Prompt students to share their favorite genre of music.  Ask: 

  • What do you enjoy about that genre?
  • How can music help people to connect with one another?  

Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE

  • Read aloud the description on the Latin Music topic page.
  • Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding. 
  • Assign Related Reading. Have students read one of the following articles: “Famous Faces.” or “Way Back When” Partner them with someone who read a different article to share what they learned with each other.

Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS 

Assign the Latin Music Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.

Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND

Students express what they learned about Latin music while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.

  • Make-a-Movie: Create a documentary-style movie describing the features of different styles of Latin music. 
  • Make-a-Map: Create a concept map that compares and contrasts different styles of Latin music. 
  • Creative Coding: Code a game where players sort different styles of Latin music by their features. 
  • Primary Source Activity: Listen to the audio clips. Cite evidence to answer the accompanying questions.
